Korean Drama

"Korean Drama" is the expression for Korean televised dramas, similar to Western miniseries, produced in the Korean language for Korean audiences. They are great for learning Korean. If you have the possibility to receive Korean TV, watch these series to get a good 'Korean ear'. Listening to these series will improve your knowledge of the Korean language.

Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia and have contributed to the general phenomenon of the Korean wave and made Korea better known with the Asian masses. Most popular Korean dramas have also become popular throughout East and Southeast Asia.

Some of the internationally most popular Korean dramas are:

  • Full House (is a 16-episode South Korean television drama broadcast by KBS in 2004. It's a televised version of a comic story.)

  • Stairway to Heaven (is a popular television drama in South Korea produced and broadcast by SBS between late 2003 and early 2004. This Korean drama stars Kwon Sang-woo, Choi Ji-woo, Kim Tae-hee, Shin Hyun-joon.)

  •  My Girl (this Korean drama is a true hit series in South Korea. With the popularity of Lee Jun Ki and the appearances of Jae Hee and Han Chae Young (both from the successful drama Delightful Girl Choon Hyang), it remained on the Top Ten List for a long time.)

  • Dae Jang Geum (Dae Jang Geum (means literally The Great Jang Geum) is aired in the USA as "Jewel in the Palace" is a 2003 TV series produced by South Korean TV channel MBC. It is based on the historical figures of the Joseon Dynasty. The drama focuses on Jang-geum (played by Lee Young Ae), the first female royal physician of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. The main themes are her perseverance and the portrayal of traditional Korean culture, Korean royal court cuisine and traditional Korean medicine.)

  •  My Lovely Sam Soon (My Lovely Sam Soon or "My Name is Kim Sam Soon" (a direct translation of the Korean title) was aired on MBC TV from June 2005 to July 2005. The series was a major hit in South Korea. Its huge success was due to the show's focus on the life of a single and chubby middle-aged woman. The physical appearance and stereotype that the female character (mid aged and overweight) portrayed in the drama increased the popularity particularly among mid aged South Korean women. Actress Kim Seon-Ah had to put on 15 pounds for her role. This Korean drama can be called the Korean version of Bridget Jones in Korea.)

  • Autumn in My Heart (is the first installment of the four part "Endless Love" drama series produced by South Korean TV Network KBS. The story is about two children that were given to the wrong parents by the hospital and all the complications that causes later in life.)

  • Princess Hours (also known as The Imperial Household, Love in Palace, Palace Love or Palace) is a popular soonjong manhwa (Korean Girls Comedy) by Park So-Hee. It was also adapted into a live-action comedy / drama series, which had its first season run in 2006.)
  • 1st Shop of Coffee Prince (stars actress Yoon Eun Hye from Princess Hours, Gong Yoo from One Fine Day, Lee Sun Gyun from White Tower and Chae Jung Ahn. Choi Han Kyul, the main character played by Gong Yoo, is the cocky son of a rich family who runs a food corporation.)

  • Boys Before Flowers (Boys Over Flowers is a Japanese shojo manga series by Yoko Kamio. The manga series ran continuously from October 1992 to September 2003, and was collected into 37 tankobon volumes. In 1996, it received the Shogakukan Manga Award for shojo)

What satisfied customers say about the Pimsleur KOREAN audios:

 Worth the money!
The repetition provided in the CD, pace and style of teaching is truly helpful for a beginner who's learning the language for the very first time. Unlike some other programs which teaches at a very fast pace, making one feels lost and confused, this one allows you time to memorize and digest what you've learn. Overall, I am truly impressed and will recommend it to everyone! -- Kori,Singapore

Best Audio Korean Lessons Available
This is the only audio Korean set you should consider buying. The rest are complete 100% GARBAGE! This applies especially to those who are going to DLI to learn Korean, as I did. This will fill the gaps nicely, as regular everyday speech is generally overlooked there. If you know you are going to DLI and really want to learn Korean, try to learn as much of this as you can before you go. The only other resource you might need outside of what you get at DLI might be a good phrasebook or two, such as Lonely Planet and/or Making Out In Korean. Again, this will help fill the gaps.
For most major languages, there are 3 parts to the Pimsleur set. For Korean there is only one, so this should be considered the beginner set--"Korean I". Hopefully, there will be a Korean II and Korean III eventually, but this is certainly a good start for those who are learning Korean for the first year or two.
Pimsleur language lessons are intended to cover speech only, but learning the writing helps you retain the language by putting it into a strange new context and forcing you to recognize it all over again. So when you have learned the writing and spelling of the vocabulary, it will reinforce the language to come back to the lessons and reproduce them by writing or typing. That's what I do anyway. (I can probably help the guy who wants a transcript, btw. No native Korean should have problem understanding any of this.)
As far as buying audio Korean lessons, there aren't many options available: you can buy this set or get ripped off because there's nothing else available that's worth any money at all! -- W. Frost (DLI Grad), Tucson, AZ, United States
